Westerland Pinotage, 2006 — South Africa

Westerland Pinotage 2006This is the first SA Pinotage we’ve ever tasted which avoided the “road tar in the wine” trap. We were a bit nervous about the 2006 vintage, expecting at least a 2007, but the wine was delightful. The nose has a bit of spice to it and the palate is thick and rich with small red berries. It fills your entire mouth with fruit and we enjoyed it with our grilled baby back ribs, shared with friends.

  1. I’m glad to hear this got 4 stars. We’re featuring Westerland’s 2008 Celebration vintage (Cabernet Sauvignon/Cinsault) in our April 2010 Classic Series; it too successfully escapes the “road tar in the wine” trap, and is actually very smooth on the palate. While it has a classic South African nose (tar), the smoky Cinsault character is cut by the blend with the Cabernet, making the wine more approachable.

    Great review.
